Looking beyond daily reality

This Upaniṣad invites us to look beyond our daily reality as revealed by our senses and our mind. Our real truth lies beyond speech and imagination. But this truth is what connects us to the rest of the cosmos. Kena Upaniṣad I: 1-5

1. excites the mind to fly away [to its objects]?
Who directs [the mind]?
Who steers the breath of life to go forward as the first?
Who excites [men] to utter this speech [of the Vedas]?
Who is the God that steers the eyes and ears?

2. He is the hearing of [our] ears,
He the thinking of [our] minds,
Him [we utter as the true transcendental] speech of [our worldly] speech,
He is the life-breath of [our] breath of life,
He is the seeing of [our] eyes.
The wise free themselves [of all these]
And after passing away from this world,
They gain immortality.

3. Our sight does not go there,
Our speech does not reach it,
Nor our minds.
We do not know, we do not understand
How one could give instruction about
This [source of our being].

4. ’It is different from what we know,
It goes beyond that which we do not know’;
Thus have we heard from the ancient [teachers]
Who has explained This to us?

5. That which cannot be expressed by speech,
But by which we express speech;
Know That only to be Brahman,
Not what people here worship [as Brahman].
